Alternative Tools for Painting Development

Here is an example of using photo editing tools to help formulate the direction of a painting.
After executing this painting, I was unsatisfied with the right side, although I really liked the overall feel of the painting. That part of the painting has already been cleared and is awaiting a change. Meanwhile, I used a photo editing program to loosely overlay what I plan to do to the real painting. I also continue with good old thumbnail sketches in graphite. Technology can assist the process of "study" without intruding on the on purity of traditional materials on the finished product.

This will be a fun and informative course on the basic principles of oil painting. Color, value, composition, and form will be addressed, as well as materials, equipment, and techniques. Individual styles will be encouraged, and all experience levels are welcome.Still life and photographs will be the primary reference items. Critique will be used in a constructive and encouraging manner. Photographing work, framing, and the use of technology for artists will be discussed, as well as many other topics concerning contemporary representational painting.

Jonathan McPhillips is lifelong resident of RI and holds a BFA from Connecticut College. He has displayed paintings in many galleries and museums since 1993, and has garnered numerous awards and recognition along the way. Most recently, Jonathan has been juried into exhibitions with the Oil Painters of America and the Mystic Seaport Maritime Gallery.
